Here's why you shouldn't use Geothermal of Oneonta (aka Geothermal Energy of Oneonta, aka Barney and Sons well drilling)

The bottom line, up top:

Geothermal of Oneonta doesn't stand behind their work. Period.

In the name of all that's holy — as well as your bank account — if you want a geothermal system in the Oneonta area do not use Geothermal of Oneonta.

Screwup after screwup

We had them install a $70,000 geothermal system. Geothermal of Oneonta screwed up from the get-go. One coolant leak after another. Thermostats that didn't work. Electrical problems.

Their fixes included duct tape:

Expensive georthermal systems shouldn't be repaired with duct tape — not by professionals. But that's what Geothermal of Oneonta did.

Breaking promises, passing the buck

Geothermal of Oneonta promised to replace the "temporary" fixes. But they never did.

Their response after months of problems: They blamed us — I kid you not — for not using the thermostats properly. (It turned out they wired them in an ... odd way, so the system would unexpectedly shut off.)

The Geothermal of Oneonta system caught fire

Their geothermal expert, Jeff, quit without giving them notice. That tells you something. And then they refused to service the units. They told us to find another company or call the manufacturer.

So we did — because the problems continued.

And one day the Geothermal of Oneonta system actually caught fire:

Nothing like having your house fill with smoke when your Geothermal of Oneonta system catches fire. (A big thank you to the Unadilla volunteer fire department ... and our smoke detectors.)
A technician from a better company examines the charred remains of the innards.

Yep. We had to have an entire unit replaced by another company. Luckily it was under warranty, and our homeowner's insurance covered the damage.

Get this: Geothermal of Oneonta told our insurance company they wouldn't take responsibility for the damage because (seriously) we had another company do work on the system. This is after they told us to find another company.

Well drillers shouldn't dabble in complex HVAC systems

You cannot trust Geothermal of Oneonta to stand behind their work. Their sales team talks a great game. But talk doesn't fix leaks, talk doesn't put out fires, talk doesn't fix bad wiring.

Geothermal of Oneonta did a shoddy job, blamed us, and refused to stand behind their work.
